When you hear the word concerto in classical music, most people probably think of a soloist accompanied by an orchestra. But what if the soloist was the entire orchestra? This idea was explored by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the classical era, who put four wind players in the foreground. The idea was fully developed in the 20th century by Béla Bartók, who premiered his Concerto for Orchestra in Boston in 1944. The soloists are the various sections of the orchestra in turn.
For two decades, Kaspar Zehnder led the Murten Classic Summer Festival, but we may also know him as the former chief conductor of the PKF Prague Philharmonic and he is a regular guest of our concert seasons. The concert will also feature solo performances by the four principal players of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra.
