Vergil’s poem Aeneid once enchanted Josquin Desprez and later Egon Krák, who also uses it in his composition Les anges du ciel to pay homage to this Franco-Flemish Renaissance musical grandmaster. The son of a music critic, Erich Wolfgang Korngold scored many films in war-torn Europe. The Violin Concerto in D major was written in peacetime, when the composer began to devote himself more to composing works that could be presented in concert halls. The work is dedicated to Alma Mahler, the wife of his musical mentor Gustav Mahler, whose Symphony No. 5 will close the concert evening. Chief conductor Daniel Raiskin has already managed to tour Switzerland at the end of August with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. The Slovak Philharmonic Choir with its choirmaster Jozef Chabroň performed concerts in Mannheim in September. The Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma, who recently premiered the Violin Concerto by the young Danish composer Mathilde Wantenaar, will again appear on the Slovak Philharmonic stage after a year and a half.
