At the end of the 19th century the popularity of Dvořák’s music was not limited to his native Czech lands. In 1884 he was invited to London where he triumphally conducted his oratorio Stabat Mater and thus triggered his artistic fame in the British Isles. Encouraged by this success he entrusted the premiere of another symphonic-vocal work, the Requiem, to orchestra and choir in Birmingham in October 1891. A year later he accepted the invitation to the USA and became a professor of the New York conservatory. Stabat Mater was composed in 1876–1877, in the time when he experienced the most tragical period in his life due to the death of his three children. The conductor of world fame Juraj Valčuha and an international quartet of soloists are welcome guests of the BMF.
