The three sonatas by Berg, Schubert and Ravel together form as if one unit of one large three-movement piano sonata. Schubert’s quiet and (mostly) meditative sonata forms a nice second movement after Berg’s dramatic sonata. The second story is a bit like that of Daniel Matej and Ligeti. Dano Matej reminded us of Bartók’s Bulgarian Dances and their interesting rhythm while studying at the Academy of Performing Arts. I had heard the dances many times (especially in Marian Varga’s arrangement) but never studied them. Dano also quotes Bartók in his composition A Set of Five Pick-Outs. The Bulgarian dances work with a rhythmic pattern of 3 + 2 + 3 , as does György Ligeti in his etudes Fanfares and Desordre. (Ivan Šiller)
