The first piano concerto was written by Sergei Rachmaninoff as a seventeen-year-old teenager. He realized the third movement and instrumentation a year later. The work presents him as an ambitious and energetic composer. These traits were blocked by the premiere of the First Symphony, which plunged the composer into a prolonged depression and melancholy. Bratislava-born Franz Schmidt was the heir to the legacy of Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner. He also liked to use ethnic (gypsy) idioms. The Fourth Symphony, described as “Requiem for my daughter”, is Schmidt's most frequently played work.
