Young Moscow native Dmitry Ishkhanov chose several works from Russian piano literature for his debut at the Philharmonic. The trio of composers not only made their mark in the world of composition but were also among the top concert pianists of their time. The spectacular third sonata (out of a total of nine) by Sergei Prokofiev, as well as Sergei Rachmaninoff’s variations on the theme of the baroque master Arcangelo Corelli, will test the pianist’s technical skills. Expression and onomatopoeia will be verified by pieces by Alexander Scriabin, who is the author of several cycles of preludes, but only Opus 11 forms a complete cycle of 24 preludes in all keys. Rachmaninov and Scriabin were basically peers, they even studied piano with the same professor Nikolai Zverev in Moscow.
