Night as a musical, artistic or literary motif that has enticed and occupied the thoughts of artists across the centuries. Harmony, melody, and rhythm all seek to evoke and capture the different types and atmospheres of nocturnal phases and environments. Nocturnes are also inherent to the evening. Mostly cheerful compositions that were played outdoors or during evening entertainments from the 18th century onwards were transformed into lyrical pieces in the 19th century. Nocturnes in particular dominated piano literature, Frédéric Chopin not least. In them, Chopin infused the three-part framework of the song form with new content giving it dramatic breadth, fantastic poetry and extraordinary expressive power. His nocturnes are considered to be the quintessence of the composer’s sweet lyricism and his most intimate expression. The Italian pianist Mariangela Vacatello will take care of creating a nocturnal atmosphere in her philharmonic debut. For the Italian television RAI5 she recently realised the project “10 colours of 10 piano sonatas” by Scriabin. We will see how many colours and their shades the night on the piano will have under her fingers at the concert.
