Claude Debussy, after his reform at the end of his life, decided to honour the tradition and wrote several charming works in the spirit of the sonata. César Franck’s best-played works are the Symphony in D minor and the Viola Sonata in A major - the latter also exists in an arrangement for cello. Gabriel Fauré is still an under-appreciated composer in this country, and it was he who was at the origin of Claude Debussy’s revolutionary deeds. Francis Poulenc was a versatile musician; he was skilled in street “chanteuse”, classical formations and, finally, liturgical music.
