The musical concert of the famous American Samuel Barber had a rather dramatic genesis. The events of the Second World War complicated the work, but eventually the work received a private premiere. Here again the composer favours an impressive blend of styles and techniques. The Bavarian composer Richard Strauss was a grand master of the large symphony orchestra.** In his youth he won the public’s favour with a series of symphonic poems, and later he applied the idea of programme music in the perhaps overly illustrative and sonically exuberant Alpine Symphony.
