Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a man of action. He knew how to subtly criticize social conditions, but he was just as skilful at striking a chord with people with his favourite subject or theme. The opera The Abduction from the Seraglio and its lush overture, with its cast of triangle and big drum, suited the taste of the time magnificently. Fazıl Say, a Turkish pianist and composer whose violin concerto is steeped in oriental melodies and rhythm, adding to the atmosphere of the harem. The solo part will be played by Juraj Čižmarovič, a Slovak violinist who is concertmaster of the German orchestra WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln.
The concert will be conducted by the hand of the music director of the Bilbao Sinfonikoa Orchestra, Erik Nielsen, who will be appearing for the first time at the Philharmonia.
