There’s probably no person who hasn’t heard Bedřich Smetana’s The Moldau in a movie, advertisement, or concert, and the same is true of Antonín Dvořák’s cello concerto. He wrote it at the end of his tenure as the director of the National Music Conservatory in New York. The Fifth Symphony by Alexander Glazunov is a masterful and optimistic work that combines the best of the national school of Balakirev and Borodin, as well as elements of Russian cosmopolitans such as Rubinstein and Rimsky-Korsakov.
The young and promising Japanese cellist Tatsuki Sasanuma, whose performances have been recognized at numerous prestigious competitions, will make his debut with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in Dvořák’s concerto.
