Song is one of the synonyms of music. Even today, in times of tumultuous genre divergence, the existence of countless musical styles and poetics, song is one of the unifying elements. Mostly we see it as an expression of positivity, of the joy of music, of singing, of “making music”. Love themes, “romance” or beautiful melancholy prevail. Such was the song until the time of Franz Schubert, who brought the dark expressiveness of death, nothingness, and extinction into his late song works. However, he has not had many followers in the historical process, and the generations after Schubert have returned to the song’s “optimism” and intoxicating beauty, though the dark themes have perhaps not escaped any of them.
